Update

Saw the ortho surgeon today.  Doesn't look like he'll need pins...at least yet.  It's a totally different 'break' than the ER explained.  More like the bones broke loose and shifted on the growth plates? It's a weird one.  He's in a cast....for a good month or so.  But he can pack boxes now :)

SKATER KID..the music is for him

So I let my son have a friend over Fri night to 'help pack'.  They don't get more done, but they more have fun not getting more done.  So after lunch his friends mom comes to get them so I can really get stuff done.  (have you ever seen boys pack? I bet there's dirty underwear in them boxes... he won't have to look for his boxes or boxers after we move, the dog will find them).

I'm getting a bunch done now... thinking I just might really pull this thing off and actually move this week....

20 minutes later the phone rings.  My friend who's actually helping me pack, teasingly hands me the phone and says, "It's P telling you he broke his arm at the skatepark".

Me:  "very funny.  har har"

I answer the phone.  "Mom?  I fell on my skateboard going down the hill at about 30 mph... I know it was that fast because A's mom was driving behind us up to the house after she let us off at the hill to ride down to the driveday.  I got a little roadrash and I think I broke my wrist... actually my elbows are shredded and my wrist is all weird, and it feels a little numb...or maybe that's the adrenaline, not sure."

All I could do is point my finger at my friend with my mouth gaping open.  Uh.  Uh.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?  IS THIS SUPPOSED TO BE FUNNY YOU GUYS?

P:  "WHAT are you talking about, Mom?  I'm serious.  I really did eat it on the asphalt.  I'll put ice on it for awhile and call you back if it's not better or swells more or something.  We already cut off the extra skin with A's pocket knife.  He'd be a really good field medic, mom."

Me:  "Did you hit your head?  no?  did you have your helmet on??????????????  ...oh, well of course not.  okkkk.  I'm coming.  AND we're going for x-rays."

P:  "X-rays????  nooooo.  I'm putting ice on it.  It'll be fine."

Me:  "I'll be there in 15 min.

3 hours later.... and a car accident/screaming lady triage setback:

Yes Ms Wrexie.  He broke his wrist.  It's on the growth plate.  He'll  have to see an ortho on Mon.  He might needs pins... you'll have to go to Tucson for that.  Tough kid you have there... they usually whine and cry a lot.  He'll be fine...

Yep.  Well, doc...we're moving this week.  Good timing, eh? Not the best way to get out of packing though, is it?
The doctor with 5 brothers just laughed and said, "I have no idea how my mom survived raising us."

Bless her heart...

Musashi Handmade Zetsurin Samurai Katana Sword

After school activities at my house....

See the floating apple???
It just got quartered.
...and see the blurrrrr of a sword?
"It slices, it dices..." and it's all Burke's fault this time.
How's his form?  Too 'baseball' for a ninja?
hehehee...

Fruit salad, anyone?
Iron Man is on it...

This Week's Highlights

High speed chase down my dead-end dirt road (cop neighbor said over 80mph).  BP lost.  Illegals bailed and ran.  They're like desert rats the way they can scramble.  Still on the loose...  CBP friend said incident at his house too.
They found the illegal's Escalade later on down the main road...loaded down with pot.  It was being towed in to add to Uncle Sam's car lot.

Sick kid at home.

Lightening storms.

Snake in the yard (just a gopher snake though, with pretty round eyes).  He gets to live in the garden.

Just learned my kid has a rattler skin in his friend's freezer.  (Don't even ask...)

Scorpion in the house. Windex won.  damn things...

(Airsoft bb's all over the floor, ..ouch.)

Gun range closed due to gnats.  I'm serious.
Apparently they can fly off with firearms and start air raids. LOL
...I never thought a gnat could be more dangerous than using reloads.  They OK'd reloads on the range this week, but not gnats.  I guess gnats make people crazy enough to shoot at each other...

How can a bug so small be such a menace?

Today, after the sun came up:

I'm off work to care for my son... and do a million other things.  Made it a few miles down the road... then:

Pretty lights for me this morning.  Speeding. 50 in a 35... he didn't say exactly how many years I'd do.  He just came up to my window, saw me on the phone and said,
"Do you know why I stopped you?"

I nodded yes, but I couldn't hang up the phone.  Just handed him my license, ins, registration and CCW I had ready for him and kept talking.

The Sheriff didn't press me or get upset.  He just stood, in a good cop-like and well-trained sideways stance....listening to my conversation... tuned to body language, holding my information in his hand.  I looked up at him mouthing "s o r r y"... but kept listening intently to my caller and ignoring him.

I've noticed cops are very sensitive to body language...tends to keep 'em alive, I'm sure.  In this case, he seemed to 'get' what was going on.  He remained patient and raised his hand in a gesture to say, "It's OK"  Then he went to his car.

I couldn't hang up.   It was my son's doctor.  You don't wait all morning for a call back, then hang up.  I had no laters left in the day anyway.  Out of laters.

The Sheriff was kind...compassionate...and huge. like a tree.
He came back to the window of my car and saw I was on the verge of something worse than speeding.
He waited patiently.
...I looked up at him apologizing again, in a way I couldn't help but look.

Three times he tolerated my ohpleasehavemercy glances..  (qualified him to hero status)

(we never have enough sheriff on duty to cover the county the size of ours.. he didn't have time for this, of that, I'm sure. Yet, he nodded kindly, like an Arizona Ranger might and let me keep talking on my phone)

I finally hung up with my caller.    Spent.

Spent, but still having to face a cop, and an interview, and other vitals to my life before the sun would set.... not having a clue how it would all end.

It took all I had to translate foreign doctor language into something meaningful in the presence of the oak tree and pretty lights and looming life-sustaining interview minutes away.

He gave me back my license... with no pink or yellow papers involved and said,
"Be careful ma'am, sounds like a rough day ...watch your speed and be safe".
"Ma'am?"  ..."be safe".

"I will," I nodded.  "I will."   "Thank you,  ...for caring."

...he walked away with a compassionate smile and wave, the kind that have to be sincere to be seen coming from an armed oak tree....giving me hope in humanity once again.  Hope hasn't been in my hood for awhile now...

...if I ever see him around again, I'll tell him how he saved me that day.  I had no energy for a life-sustaining interview, let alone a run in with an irritable cop.  I was so thankful.
I had left early enough to include that little event, and made the bank to save my future life, and get to the job interview early, which my interviewer seemed to appreciate:

We talked 5 minutes.   But no interview.

5 minutes more.

Still no interview.

(Can't read his expressions.  Intimidating.  Busy.)

Just keep it going, Wrexie.  Life depends on it.  Smile. Talk. Don't let him intimidate you.  Be confident.  Think positive ++++. You can do this...

He called in his secretary and told her to cancel the next 4 interviews and hired me on the spot.  Told me the pay... blahblahblah.  Said, "I don't need letters from your boss or to waste time interviewing you.  You're hired. When can you start?  ...oh, and a raise in 90 days."

Once I got my jaw off the floor, I managed a "thank you"... and a hand shake.

I've had 5 jobs since the school had to let me go due to no funding.  I think this one will keep us alive.  Finally.   But what a strange day.  and a crazyhard week...

Doctor visit stuff is pending... but my little dude is doing better.  I know he'll be ok...because nothing will ever stop me from making sure he's always ok.

....But the day's not over yet:

Number one son sends a dreaded text:

"Mom... if you hear anything on the news... I'm OK."

WHAT? ... I'm driving again. Sh**

Next msg... "chemical plant's gonna blow up."

Wrexie throws some dust...
...pulls over.

WHERE ARE YOU?  ARE YOU OK?

several 'torture mom minutes' later...

"Oh, yeah.  I'm fine.  We're in the building across the street. I can't see the sky through the smoke though. ..and I smell like oil.  It's bad."

HOW are you fine, then?

"If it blows up, they'll send us home... but it looks like they were able to stop the explosion.
Love you mom."

and I wonder why I startle and jump when a turtle farts.

Hope was bleak this morning... I dreaded this day for even more reasons than I wrote about...  the past several weeks have been a hell of a ride... but as I watch the sun set, I think I just might feel safe enough to hope it just might...possibly... be ok again.  one day.

the end of today. Yay.

Easter Sunrise on Divorce Hill

I've been divorced a couple years now... but the roller coaster isn't easy to stop.  It had many years of momentum built up.  Over 25...  that's a lot of hills and screaming blind turns and g-forces that make your hair stand on end...

and whiplash.

It gets better as time heals and truth finds its way into the lives of those affected.  Kids hurt in their innocence.  If they know they are loved unconditionally... their hearts mend in a way they will beat to the rhythm of a better life.  All kids want their parents back together.  I don't care how old they are.  They want wholeness.  Unbroken lives.  But in their perception of life... they can't always see that they were protected so well, they didn't see the pain and suffering that was causing a slow death in someone they love...

Divorce is hell.  Torment.  Pain.  It tears and rips at the core of our hearts.

It's hard to breathe in the fog of it's initial confrontation.  When I opened the door to that confrontation... and said, "No more"... all hell broke loose.  It doesn't matter who you are... nothing can prepare you for the impact of being brave enough to open the door.   What's on the other side is paralyzing at first...

It takes bravery to remove yourself from chaos and harm and hurt and pain.... and many times, abuse.  The bravery isn't in staying in the destruction, but moving out of it to make a better life for those you love ....and for yourself.

I never would have made it without the love and support of my friends who helped me through it....
Other things that happened along the way of my journey out were incomprehensible.  But I can say I survived the valley of the shadow of death...

It's dark in there....especially when you first enter and your eyes haven't adjusted to the light.  It's cold and lonely and terrifying... and you can't see the light on the other side.

We weren't made to go it alone.  Alone doesn't apply to any walk of life, not in the military, not in the workforce, not in family life....

We dont' always get to be the one with the flashlight... sometimes we have to hold on to and trust someone to hold it for us until we get to the other side..... and begin to see a new day of hope.

There is hope.  If you hurt... don't let go of that.  Hold on.  The dawn is coming...

And it will be a brilliant Easter sunrise.  I know.  I've seen it.

Driving Up Flowerpot Ramps

Yes, that is a tire skid mark on my flowerpot.

13 year-old boys
motorcycles
It was his friend this time

"So you drove UP the flowerpot right in front of the picture window??"

"But the throttle was off...
and I lost control trying to turn."
(at what speed, dude?)

I was sitting right by the window he nearly drove through.
I heard the crash, but was afraid to look.

sheesh....

Kids have a Freeze Day...

                                                              It was cold this morning...
3 degrees, -6 with the windchill.
Pipes froze of course...

But the WORST thing was... NO coffee.
What kind of cowgirl gets in THAT predicament?

But I do have firewood we gathered from the mountains.
Nothin' like a roaring fire...

Then there was THIS:

Decaffeinated Mom:   Why is the water in the toilet pink?
Little Dude:                 Oh... that.
Decaffeinated Mom:   It's pink? Talk to me.
Little Dude:                 Sorry mom.
I had to flush and the pipes are frozen...
...so I used the red Gatorade.
School's closed tomorrow too.  (I'm hiding the Gatorade)

Thankful... again.

This is my middle child.

He works in a refinery in Texas.  A refinery that almost blew up last week.  An entire town was evacuated the danger of explosion was so high.
...seems hydrogen was leaking at a rapid rate.

Thankfully, he was off that day... but there wouldn't have been a safe place had he been there.  I try not to think about what can happen there..

So mommas,
don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys or work in refineries.

127 Hours

I celebrated Christmas with my youngest this weekend. I love the magic Christmas brings to a child's world. ...reminds me I don't ever want to grow up. ;)

We had a great weekend... we ended it spending a Sun. afternoon at a spot we found last year. Kind of our own little shooting range. Always fun. Sometimes a "guest" shows up to our little world (hehe) and wants to shoot too. This time it was a Navy man who had seen more action than he bargained for... Christmastime can bring out some ghosts, for many folks. He had a few he was shootin' at, I think. ...probably the one he just told a complete stranger about.

Oh, I worry about our troops returning home. Do they get all the help they need and deserve?

While we were there... I got a call from my oldest son. If you're a parent, you know that once your kids are grown... they just don't call home as much. But it seems he has a few more of my genes for adventure than I realized... and he called to tell me about his latest. Just a weekend survival trip, mom. Cool, huh? I just don't understand why I can't get more of my buddies interested in this stuff. They can be such wusses.

Then we talked a little about movies... he's been wanting me to watch "Into the Wild"... so I promised I would get it this week.

Then he left me with this.... "and look up the trailer to "127 Hours".... You HAVE to see it, Mom.

I just watched the trailer below...
Uhhhmm... my heart skipped a beat. He's not.......... thinking of.... THAT ....kind of adventure, I hope?

I'm callin' that kid today. Last I checked he had a good dose of common sense, just need to make sure it's still intact.

Time

Some people understand life and live it to it's fullest...
And are lucky enough to at least die doing something they love, having someone they love.
Others don't.  They trust in all the tomorrows...   But life doesn't work that way.

I miss you Jim.
I miss our talks...

It IS a grand Canyon!

I took my munchkin to the Grand Canyon for fall break...
because you CAN'T live in AZ and not have seen it!

Is there a cleft in that rock under those blue skies?

Walking the trail up to Horseshoe Bend...
from here, you'd never guess what was ahead.

The Colorado River looks small down in that bend...

The rock...of Horseshoe Bend.
cool, huh?

But we didn't see any California Condors.
(They must have been in California)

It is really strange to watch birds fly below you...

Much better pictures someone else took of Horseshoe Bend...

The most perfect fly fishing spot in AZ
...it was a beautiful spot to watch the sunset too.

I know, I know... I was wayyyyy to close!
AND it's rutting season...
But he was lying on the grass right next to the sidewalk.
I HAD to take his picture....

Canyon walls near Navajo Bridge.

South Rim

Rest for the weary.

Looks like a mushroom...

I'd never get tired of a sunset anywhere in the canyon...

Nice way to end the day...

Mowin'

                                                 My little cowboy workin' hard.

Almost done mowing... it took 8 hours.  But the house is clear from dry grass now.  We had so much rain this monsoon, so there's a lot of vegetation to make fire a serious concern this fall.  I feel much better now.  The firemen have been working overtime to cut grass along the roads and in alleys... better to deal with it now.

Bolt's not sure what to think of the tractor... but she can outrun it!
I love living out here.  Yesterday afternoon I was mowing as the sun began to set... the mountains turned pink... then orange.  I couldn't think of another place I'd rather be.

Coming to America

My grandfather came to America from England on a boat when he was 5 ...in his little English shorts and cap.
He started his own dry cleaning business, worked hard, and realized the abundant American Dream. He didn't take advantage of our system of freedom in any way... he became an asset to our great nation. He was involved in the community, and gave back every chance he had. He hired other hard-working individuals coming to America to do the same. They were grateful to do jobs like housecleaning and tailoring. He treated them like family and paid them according to their work and skill improvement. I remember as a child I loved visiting him at the dry cleaners and runnin up to "Flo", his tailor,  giving her a HUGE hug and asking if she would show me all her buttons and thread colors and teach me to sew.  She still spoke broken English...but willingly learned our language.

They gave back to America...

My great-grandmother was from Switzerland... grandmother & grandfather were from Germany... my dad has Irish and Native Am blood in his veins...  I love America.
Living in a border area of AZ, I see lots of immigration. Yet I fear for the lives of my friends who are border patrol agents and law enforcement officers. I worked in our schools and saw firsthand the irresponsible abuse of our already burdened system. Busloads of children are sent across the border to be given a free education at our expense, a large percentage of those children need extra help and accommodations...their parents having no intention of coming here to work or give back in most of THESE cases. We take them in... heads seem to turn the other way. Same with the hospital system and other forms of government that cares for those in need.  Many drive uninsured.

Yet I've lost my job due to lack of funding in the schools.  I'll have to pay almost $500 a month to keep my insurance ...that they receive for free.

I live and work with law-abiding citizens who come across the border legally. They are much like the heritage I know and love of this great country. Their children join our military... they've learned our language and use their native speech to help others.

I'm not prejudice, I'm angry.  I'm not "for" racial profiling, I'm for doing what's right to protect our borders from drug lords and people who feel we owe them and want to weaken us.

I love this desert I call home.  I'm sitting outside this morning.  It's actually cold!  The breeze is blowing and the smell of desert sweet grasses fills my senses.  It's tranquil...and beautiful.  The mountains seem majestically purple this morning... yet to go up into the National Forest means fearing drug traffickers and illegal foot traffic.   We have signs posted to warn us that our borders and national forests are in fact NOT safe...  I always carry a gun.

It just shouldn't be this way in my America.

You won't hear me say much on politics... but this one is close to home.
OK...  My rant is over.

There's so much good here... I don't mean to dwell on the bad.  I just want to see it get fixed.  I see a gaping wound in my America... It hurts to watch that.

I plan on celebrating Her birthday today... with a BBQ and friends.  Some of those people are border patrol agents and ranchers and teachers.  I don't take one day for granted.  I've learned life can be short and that every day matters.

We have much to be thankful for...

Happy Birthday America!
