This morning the roosters didn't crow. ??
I woke up late...wondering why. When you live out in the country, sound is an important sense.
I heard a chicken make a brief "cluck".. but the guineas weren't squawking. That was REALLY weird if something was wrong.
They weren't sounds a visitor would even notice. But it sounded all "wrong" to me... I didn't listen to my instincts, and sleep won out a little longer.
When I did wake.. it was to find out my dog, Bolt had gone under the gate at Mach 2. I could barely see where she escaped. She can morph, the dog is amazing that way.
Something was after her chickens. There were feathers in the yard... but all the birds were accounted for.
I didn't see it first-hand, but the coyotes were on the other side of the gate. A pack came right up to the house. And she took them on at full speed...
She took down the first one, sinking her teeth into its neck, impacting it so hard it caused them to go into a spin. She held on. The coyote couldn't get a hold of her. She let it go after stunning it good and went after another one... chasing it across the field, onto the doctors property... and down into the wash. ALL the coyotes tucked tail and ran.
She wasn't ready to come home. She refused to come when called. She "secured" all the area she felt necessary... She had to be leashed to get her back in...
I was so afraid they hurt her... but she only had a scratch from a mesquite tree... I couldn't believe it. I knew she was a tough little girl... but to take on an entire pack??? wow.
Yep, she got leftover steak for breakfast. Good dog...

A storm is brewing... there's thunder and rain in the distance.
So before it headed this way, I thought I'd give the patiently waiting hummers a refill...
dog days for Bolt
it's cooler down here..
..and there's something down here
The first monsoon tarantula
Uh oh, I think it got Bolt. She's limping.
She acted like a snake bit her or she got shot...scared me to death.
She laid in her chair and moped for over an hour.
She must have stepped on the fuzzy spider and got the barbed hairs in her paw.
Silly dog.
Now she's hiding under my desk...
afraid of the thunder. Poor doggie.

Paperdog
She takes her job seriously...
Bolt is my papergirl.
She goes out for her morning walk
...down the long driveway
...to the dirt road
finds the morning paper by the gate
and brings it to the front porch.
She sits on the bench in the sunshine
...and looks in the window
of the kitchen door
waiting for me to notice her
...after I have made the coffee.
I open the door.
She trots in, drops the paper and sits,
anxiously waiting for....
the sound of the doggie cookie jar.
Yum.
It's a dogs life.

Morning Visitor
I took this picture last spring...
Today, a large male ran across the front yard.
(I was concerned about Bolt's whereabouts,
so I didn't grab my camera)
He stopped and turned several times and stared toward the house... he could see us in the windows.
They're beautiful animals, he had a nice thick winter coat already ...and looked very healthy....but it gave me the chills to see him look into the house like he did.

It's been getting down in the low 30's at night. I'm sure food is becoming scarce for them.
I need to keep a closer eye on my doggie....

Good Dogs
This is Fila, it was Dana's dog.
A Jack Russel...hyper little doggies, they are.
But fierce
(She was a sweetie...see her heart-light glowing?)
My own fierce protector got between me and a snake today.
Brave, huh?

I was oblivious...
too busy reading about a house for sale, and didn't even see or hear the snake.
Bolt tried to pull me away from it...
and when I didn't pay attention, she rammed me in the leg.
THAT was when I noticed the hisssssss and realized what was going on.
It took several seconds to register how close it was...
...or just where exactly it was.
Once I saw it, the adrenaline kicked in.
It was a good reminder to be more cautious where I tread.
Glad it was just a gopher snake...
I love my dog. ♥

Bolt!
I think we found our dog's birth mother.
Cuz this little jill is not an innocent Flower.
She's a lightening Bolt.
She doesn't run through fields, she bounces.
She can't just sniff coyote tracks, she inhales them,
then jumps straight up in the air like she's on crack.
She can jump in and out of car windows...
just ask the folks at the gas station.
(and, uhh, the landlord...) yeah.
She chases flies...and catches them
...on the bathroom counter top.
BOLT.
Does she answer to it, you ask?
She doesn't just answer, she smiles and winks...

Blurry... or is it?
Some days can be blurry ...my camera agrees.
I took my dog for a romp into the canyon this morning.
The creeks were running from the rains...
not sure of the terrain before them.
The forest: cool, lush, and fragrant.
Trickling water
Tranquil and Serene
Hypnotic
Refreshing
The re-newer of life
...when you live in the desert.
Tiny purple butterflies danced above a babbling brook
as if they were auditioning for the movie
Fantasia.
...and as if on cue from an invisible conductor,
they all disappeared in one motion,
only to open their wings again in complete unison
as the music of the brook regained its rhythm.
As we climbed up out of the coolness of the canyon's floor,
Love marked my trail
to show me the way home...
But my great protector of beetles and bears
couldn't keep her eyes open for the drive back.

Should I pick this "Flower"?
Hi. I'm Flower.
Squeaky toys make me *SMILE*
I'm fawn colored with a dark streak down my back.
...white tip at the end of my tail, white chest.
Wrexie is wondering if you can figure out what
mixed breeds I am.
She's thinking of adopting me,
but the last two dogs she had on trial wanted to
eat down the house when she left.
I just chew my bone...I even share it.
...SO FAR, I'm a good girl.
